Home Salon vs. Actual Salon: What I’ve Learned from Doing Both

Both are valid, both can thrive!

As someone who recently transitioned from running a beauty business in my spare room to managing an official salon space, I’ve experienced both sides. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:

1. There’s No Shame in Working from Home

If you can save money by starting at home, do it. Use those savings to reinvest in your business. Once you move out of your house, chances are you’ll never go back, so enjoy that phase while it lasts.

2. The Perks of Being Home-Based

Working from home came with undeniable advantages. I could welcome clients early or late, and my spare room, decorated like a salon suite still gave off a professional, yet affordable vibe.

3. Spotlessness Was Non-Negotiable

Running a home salon meant that hygiene and standards had to be impeccable. I wanted clients to walk in without ever questioning my professionalism. Since moving to a proper clinic, my bookings have noticeably increased, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

4. Visibility Shifted With a Shopfront

Having a physical location changed everything. The space now markets itself, attracting walk-ins and boosting visibility. Back at home, I relied heavily on social media to keep my pipeline full.

5. On Letting “Strangers” Into My Home

At first, I worried about letting new clients into my personal space. Then someone told me: “They’re not strangers, they’re your clients.” That perspective changed everything. Good people bring good energy, whether at home or in a salon.

6. The Bottom Line

Working from home is a smart place to start when finances are tight. It helps you save, build your brand, and learn what kind of space you eventually want. But when the time feels right, take the step. The professionalism of a salon space will elevate you and your business.
